New Years’ Resolutions – It’ll take more than good luck

It’s that time of year again when gym membership goes through the roof, Weight Watchers meetings become bloated and e-cigarette sales boom.   Research shows that over 50% of the UK population make New Years’ resolutions and sadly only 8% will achieve their goals. 

 There are many reasons for this  amount of failure; Setting unrealistic goals, setting too many goals, lack of emotional investment, premature sense of achievement by sharing with friends before success has been achieved……     So, what can you do to increase your chance of achieving your 2017 goals?

Goals are important, they give us a sense of direction and purpose and once completed, a great sense of achievement.     But it is important that we set realistic, simple, measurable goals that we have a high desire and drive to achieve.     New Year is a popular time to set goals, but it is more useful if we set/revise/review our goals throughout the year.      And here’s a couple of other tips to help you to success in 2017.

Your mindset and beliefs need to be considered when setting your goals.    Are you aiming for something that goes against your belief system?   If you have a hard-wired belief that you will fail at something or don’t deserve success, then this will make your attempts of success half-hearted and failure will be the outcome.   This will reinforce your sense of failure and impact your self-esteem, a bad cycle to get into.   Break the cycle by……

Writing your goals down, this will help you articulate what you want and trigger your inner voice of doubt, who will plant a seed of doubt about success.   Listen to your inner voice and rewrite the narrative to a positive story.  Reinforce your ability and positive intent by affirming your new story every day.    

Consider how important achieving this goal is to you.    Is it something you can emotionally invest in?  What will the consequences of not making the change be?  Who else will benefit from your success?   What do you have to win/lose?  How will you benefit and how will you sustain it?  

On the converse side….

Be realistic about what success will bring you.  Having unrealistic ideas of what losing weight, stopping smoking or getting our finance in order, will give us, leads to disappointment when we realise that is hasn’t solved all your issues.

Focus on one goal and make it Ssmart – Simple, specific, achievable, realistic, measurable,  and time oriented. Trying to focus on multiple goals puts a lot of pressure on you and can be quite stressful.    Make small changes and set milestones which can be celebrated along the way, instead of waiting until you’ve achieved the whole goal.    This will keep you motivated and spur you on during difficult times.

There’s safety in numbers – whilst it might reduce your long-term success to announce your goal to the world, it is helpful to work toward a goal with a trusted friend or partner.   This way you can share ideas, talk about your ups and downs and if you have a competitive streak, go all out to get there first!

Reward yourself and celebrate success.   Achieving your goal will be a reward but to give yourself an extra incentive, set aside an additional reward.   This could be a special outing, spa day, day at the races, a day at the beach – anything that is special and meaningful to you and out of your ordinary routine.

And most of all be kind to yourself.    If you slip up or fall off the wagon then don’t see it as total failure, learn from it and carry out.   Don’t be tempted to give it all up, revisit your reasons why you want this so much, re-read your written goal, revise it if necessary.    Remind yourself of how far you have come and remember what the consequences will be if you give up now.
